Rethinking dramaturgy
Notions such as narration, community, stage design, network and spectator are starting to displace the traditional protagonism of writing in dramaturgy, which is now situated on the dividing line between the physical and the verbal. This book, fruit of the First International Seminar on New Dramaturgies (Centro Párraga, 2009), examines this question and its presentation marks the beginning of the academic year of the Master in Performing Arts Practices and Visual Culture offered by the Study Centre at Museo Reina Sofía.
Dramaturgy can be deemed to occupy a space midway between the three factors that comprise the performative phenomenon: theatre, acting and drama. It then becomes apparent how, in different periods and in different contexts, from each one of these places the others have been critiqued and transformed. Dramaturgy is a place of mediation. By defining it this way it may seem that an old concept is being reinvented, and in a way it is true. But redefinitions also have the function of opening new spaces for action and reflection, without giving up a dense network of memories and mediations.
