This encounter is part of the Artistic Research Practice Seminar from the Museo Reina Sofía’s Study Programme Connective Tissue, sees Miguel Errazu and Paloma Polo converse with Yazan Khalili around the distance or conflict that can transpire between an artwork (and the politics it upholds) and the economic and political agendas that decide and channel its institutionalisation. Khalili analyses his experience as the director of the non-profit cultural organisation Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah and the criticism articulated towards forms of financing and the foundations upon which a cultural institution is established under settler colonialism.

Moreover, Khalili conducts research into the dissemination and circulation of images, focusing specifically on their political exploitation and containment and surveillance technology. In the session, work will centre on questions he raises: How do images live outside photography? Is stopping our photographs from circulating an option, even when we keep on taking them? Can image-creating devices be subverted effectively?

Yazan Khalili is a visual artist, architect and cultural activist who works both inside and outside Palestine, where he directed the Sakakini Cultural Centre from 2015 to 2019. His work employs photography, film language and the written word to deconstruct historically constructed landscapes, interweaving parallel stories through time and questioning the act of looking. In 2020, he co-founded the Palestinian radio station Radio Alhara.
