Joaquín Torres García moved to Spain in 1891, settling in Barcelona. His relationship with Spain is well known, as he worked there in various periods of his life, mixing with representatives from the intellectual and artistic circles of the time. During his first stay in Barcelona, part of his work was associated with Catalan Noucentisme, with regard to both his pictorial output and the texts he published in Catalan. Filosofía presentada por Palas en el Parnaso (Filosofía Xª Musa) (Philosophy Presented by Pallas on Parnassus [Philosophy of the 10th Muse]) is one of his most important works of the time, and is part of the return to the rules of Classicism advocated by Eugenio d'Ors. Three versions of the painting exist: this one, belonging to the Museo Reina Sofía (originally a gift from the artist to d’Ors), the one done for the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, and a third held by the Torres García Foundation, Montevideo. The theme must have been particularly important to the artist, because it is one of the rare pieces that is actually referred to by name in his writings. The Noucentiste context also encompasses the group that Torres García did for the Saló de Sant Jordi in the old Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
