In 1923 Pancho Cossío went to Paris with his friend, the sculptor Daniel Alegre. In the French capital he fell in with the renowned circle of the magazine Cahiers d’art, which printed a number of articles on his work, written by the two main architects behind the prestigious publication, Zervos and Tériade. In Paris, Cossío also came into contact with the Spanish painters around Pablo Picasso: Manuel Ángeles Ortiz, Ismael de la Serna, Josep de Togores, José María de Ucelay and so on, and, as a result, his compositions from that moment on showed a huge influence of the genial artist from Malaga. Los guantes (The Gloves) is a still life painted during what could be considered as one of the artist’s most creative periods, the late 1920s. This is a painting of balanced proportions, the perfect reflection and combination of the influence of Juan Gris and the skill of Picasso’s great still lifes from around 1925.
