After some years away, Daniel Vázquez Díaz returned from Paris in 1918, bringing with him to Spain many of the lessons he had taken from Cubism. Benjamín Palencia was very taken with the Huelva artist’s starkly faceted compositions, with their light tones and geometric structuring, and it is probably in these early Vázquez Díaz paintings that he found the inspiration for his own works of the time. But like many of his colleagues who were interested in new art movements, at least for a time Palencia simultaneously indulged his Cubist love of geometricisation, taken from Vázquez Díaz, with work on a new-style realism. From this came the pictures such as Pueblos (Villages), which were to be a feature of the La Mancha artist’s work throughout the 1920s and the early 1930s, alternating with other works in a very different style.
