Abellón is an audiovisual piece produced by Xoán-Xil and rooted in a concert performed with Ariel Ninas and Paula Ballesteros on 13 April 2023, inside the framework of the programme of activities under the title When Destiny Catches Up with Us. Desperate Actions Before the Sixth Extinction. Both the concert and this video activate elements from the publication Abellón. O libro negro das zoadeiras (A Central Folque, 2020), by Xoán-Xil and Mauro Sanín: a speculative essay which addresses the relevance of the buzzing sound of insects in ritual practices through sound experimentation and the danza do abellón (Dance of the Bumblebee).

The danza do abellón was a funeral rite practice carried out in the wakes of certain rural areas of Galicia in the early twentieth century, whereby participants formed a circle around the deceased and made a buzzing sound akin to the buzzing of bees so as to lead their soul to the next world. According to Western tradition, it was believed that these insects connected the planes of the divine and the spiritual.
