This retrospective centred on Ben Shahn surveys his career via a theme-based presentation of works on different supports and an array of archive documents. Such an ensemble of materials displays the artist’s progressive and humanistic approach and reveals the often scantly appreciated complexity of his aesthetic vision. During times shaped by the influence of Abstract Expressionism, Shahn championed the figurative, arguing that, in a counter to the formalist doctrine, “form is the very shape of content” and that his work abided by a “personal realism” applied to the observation of people and his daily environment.
