Margarita Ledo (Spain, 1951) is among the pre-eminent theorists of essay film from a feminist perspective, her work combining research and film practice. Accordingly, she has published Del Cine Ojo a Dogma 95 (Paidós, 2004), Cine de fotógrafos (Gustavo Gili, 2005) and El cuerpo y la cámara (Cátedra, 2020), and produced the films Santa Liberdade (2004), Liste, pronunciado Líster (2007), A cicatriz branca (2012) and Nación (2020). Historical memory, Spanish exile and the construction of difference in the body and in the subject that gazes and narrates are the major themes she explores. In 2020, she was invited by the Museo Reina Sofía’s Juan Antonio Ramírez Chair — the occasion on which this interview was conducted — to engage in conversation about feminist essay film, what is understood by this audiovisual form, and its foremost representatives in a genealogy that stretches from Maya Deren, Chantal Akerman and Marguerite Duras to the interviewee herself.
