This retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of Jörg Immendorff (Bleckede, Germany, 1945 –Düsseldorf, Germany, 2007) surveys a career spanning more than four decades, setting forth the key stages and transformations in the artist’s work: from the sociopolitical and political upheaval works he conceived between the 1960s and early 1980s, to the encoded paintings in the latter stages of his output.

Rather than follow a strict chronology, the show, which welcomes in the region of one hundred works by the artist in an array of mediums — painting, sculpture, drawings — is organised around different themed chapters, threaded together with the evolution and processes of change in Immendorff’s art.

Dates: From 30 October, 2019 to 13 April, 2020
Location: Sabatini Building, Floor 1

Organized by: Haus der Kunst, Munich, in collaboration with the Museo Reina Sofía
Curatorship: Ulrich Wilmes

Encounter centred on Jörg Immendorff. Ulrich Wilmes

This encounter/guided tour sees Ulrich Wilmes, art historian and curator of the exhibition Jörg Immendorff. The Task of the Painter (Museo Reina Sofía, 30 October 2019 – 13 April 2020), shine a light on the career of the German artist from multiple perspectives and with a direct connection to the works on display. The aforementioned retrospective commences with the first stages of sociopolitical upheaval at the end of the 1960s and concludes with the hermetic paintings and allegories from the artist’s mature period — essentially, four decades of activity by a chronicler of tumultuous times. In this tour, Wilmes highlights Immendorff’s particular view of art and his own existence as an artist.

This series of tours around the exhibition Mario Merz. Time is Mute takes a closer look at the relationship between the ideas underpinning the work of the Italian artist and contemporary thought on nature. The view of nature, from Romanticism to Arte Povera; the origins of architecture in nature and the meaning of dwelling linked to existence; contemporary eco-social philosophy; and the correspondence between object and language are the themes that make up these visits.

Based on the principles of the exhibition, the four tours converse from different viewpoints, seeking to frame the artist in a broader system of relationships.

As part of the series of performing arts staged in collaboration with the Community of Madrid’s Teatros del Canal, the Museo Reina Sofía presents #LOSMICRÓFONOS (#THEMICROPHONES) by Jorge Dutor and Guillem Mont de Palol.

In the piece we sit in on a conversation in which those speaking only do so through the names of famous stars, well-known lines from mainstream films or melodies learnt from themed radio and the background music of stores and transportation. These references are all tied to particular pop stars or, more specifically, to the names of particular stars or, more specifically, to the sound made from pronouncing such names.

Upon its conclusion, the performance will be followed by an encounter with the artists, presented and moderated by Isabel de Naverán.

Date: Wednesday, 30 October 2019
Hour: 7pm
Location: Nouvel Building, Auditorium 400
Admission: free, until full capacity is reached

Concert. Susy Shock and Bandada de Colibríes. Traviarca

European tour Traviarca, 2019

European tour Traviarca, 2019

As part of her European tour, trans sudaca activist Susy Shock and her group Bandada de Colibríes (Flock of Hummingbirds) will perform a concert in the Museo Reina Sofía, coinciding with the release of their latest album Traviarca. This is a neologism alluding to that transvestite which, due to their experience and wisdom, is respected by their equals and community. More specifically, Traviarca pays homage to Lohana Berkins — and, through her, to many others with “no name”.

This concert is articulated inside the Museo’s force line “Action and radical imagination”, which champions public activities and spaces of thought and research from feminist and LGTBIQ+ perspectives.
