Drifts and Derivations

Experiences, journeys and morphologies

This volume pivots around different concepts of architecture which, in Brazil and Chile, responded to the dogmas of architectural and urban modernity. It explores visionary models mindful of the local in their mode of approaching the connection between public space and community life, topography and urbanism, reflected in the drawings, texts and architectural designs of Flávio de Carvalho, Juan Borchers, Lina Bo Bardi, Roberto Matta and Sergio Bernardes and practices in the Escuela de Valparaíso. Poets and architects, drawing inspiration from a growing drive towards modernity, shared a belief in the capacity of Western technology to engage in dialogue — but without imposing itself — with other territories and other conceptions of the human being.
