Esteban Vicente

Work 1950-1998

The first catalogue to assemble the sum of Esteban Vicente’s work, from his first exhibitions with the New York School in the Kootz Gallery in 1950 to his later work, which feature in the eponymous retrospective. The show constitutes a definitive approach to the painter for the Spanish public, given that he remained largely unknown in his native country. A wide-reaching interview with the show’s curator, Barbara Rose, reveals many of the keys to the artist: “I am an American painter because I came to live in this country when I was young. But art transcends borders. I am considered an American painter, but my culture will always be Spanish”, he declared. The catalogue includes other essays on his relationship with the American school and his method for observing nature, as well as his chronology and biography.
