Julião Sarmento
A catalogue for the exhibition on the Portuguese artist conceived as a retrospective which evades a temporary and chronological reading, seeking instead to design a cartography taken from flying over a field of images created and recreated by Sarmento on canvas and paper and via photography and video in relation to recurring motifs of seduction, sex and latent violence. The texts contained within analyse the unsettling and autobiographical component of his images and the dialogue between them, which are indifferent to chronological jumps. The catalogue concludes with the poem “A Julião Sarmento” by Alicia Chillida, drawing inspiration from texts by Pessoa, Auster and Octavio Paz.
