Wols: Cosmos and Street

This catalogue, like the exhibition, contributes to recovering the figure of German artist Wols — whose real name was Otto Wolfgang Schulze — from a certain aura of doom associated with his facet as a post-war painter and with the origins of Informalism, placing him inside a new context which allows, for the first time, an exploration into the historical roots of his artistic production. The selection of his drawings, prints, watercolours and, from the latter stages of his career, oil paintings is joined by his photographs, in which he explores the human condition, drawing from “the street”. These works denote a heterogenous treasure trove where the subversion of reality comes up against more prosaic aspects. The publication includes a selection of his aphorisms and a complete bibliography.
