What time does the Museo open and close?

Who can access the Museo free of charge and what supporting documents must be submitted as proof for free entry?
You can check the collectives who are exempt from payment here. An official document must be issued for each free admission. Any documents without an expiry date will not be valid.

What is the ticket returns policy?
Generally speaking, changes and returns are not permitted. Once tickets have been purchased, changes or returns cannot be made, with the exception of situations where services cannot be provided by the Museo due to unforeseen circumstances and are external to visitors. The reimbursement of the amount paid will be made using the same payment method.

Can free tickets be collected beforehand?
No. Free tickets are only issued on the day of the visit.

Are there certain opening times or days when admission is free of charge?

Do you have to pay for or book tickets to visit exhibitions in the Palacio de Cristal and Palacio de Velázquez?
Entry to these sites is free of charge. You do not need to book.

Visits – During Your Visit

Can I access the Museo with a backpack or other type of bag?
Access is only allowed with small bags for personal belongings or with backpacks measuring no more than 30 x 30 cm.
People entering the Museo with small backpacks must wear them on their front to avoid disturbing other visitors and to ensure they do not brush against the artworks.

Can I leave the Museo and come back in again?
Yes. Admission is valid for the whole day. Tickets must be shown upon each re-entry to the Museo.

Am I allowed to take photographs inside the Museo?
Photographs may be taken without a flash, tripod, selfie stick or any other type of camera stand in all of the Museo’s sites, with the exception of places where indicated otherwise.

Are guided tours available?
Individuals visiting the Museo can enjoy the programme of guided tours conducted by the cultural mediation team. In general, prior booking is not required to attend these tours. The programme is available here.

Appraisal and valuation of artworks
Given that the Museo Reina Sofía is a national museum, no expert assessments of artworks can be carried out for individuals, in accordance with the current legislation. To this effect, please contact art galleries or auction houses.


What is the procedure for exhibiting work in the Museo Reina Sofía
The Museo Reina Sofía’s temporary exhibitions range from major retrospectives, historical exhibitions, thesis exhibitions, monographic shows and site-specific projects with new-work commissions for the Palacio de Cristal, in the Retiro Park, or inside the Fissures programme, whereby the Museo seeks to offer an environment and resources to international artists who are beginning to have a major body of work behind them.

The Museo’s exhibitions programme is planned three or more years in advance and shows are often the outcome of work generated either by the Museo or in collaborations with other institutions. All exhibitions and site-specific commissions stem from the Museo’s direct invitation to artists and curators, bearing in mind its programme strands at a particular moment in time. 

The temporal scope of exhibitions programmed in the Museo Reina Sofía spans from 1900 to the present day.

Projects will be assessed by the Museo’s arts team. Please take into consideration the following aspects:

  • Include a letter outlining the work or project in question, attaching a CV if deemed necessary.
  • In view of the volume of proposals received, the Museo Reina Sofía will only commit to responding to those it considers to be in line with its programmes.
  • The Museo will do its best to reply to these proposals within two or three months of receiving them.
  • If this is in relation to a first exhibition in Spain, our advice is to get in touch with smaller exhibition spaces.
  • The Museo Reina Sofía is not a commercial space and, therefore, cannot represent artists or sell their works.
  • Additional materials do not need to be sent to the director of the Museo or the head of the Exhibitions Area.


What are the criteria for carrying out restoration on a work?
The Conservation-Restoration Department is part of the Museo, a public institution, and as a result does not facilitate assessments to individuals given that it adheres to the conservation and restoration work of the Museo Reina Sofía Collection.

The website section of the Conservation-Restoration Department offers information on the restoration process of certain works from the Collection, and on the Contemporary Art Conservation Conference, which is held annually, in February, and organises discussions and forums among industry professionals.

Can school visits to the Museo be arranged without a guide?
School groups can enter the Museo independently. Please check booking information here.

What is the procedure for registering a group in school activities?

Are there activities in the Museo for younger children? From what age do they begin?
Activities for children start from five upwards and are designed as an experience to be shared with an accompanying adult. A tailor-made assessment is available at the Education Information Point when planning your visit with children. 

Are there activities in the Museo for young people and teenagers?
There is a programme for teenagers aged between 15 and 17 and another for young adults aged between 18 and 21 — these are team1517 and team1821, respectively. Full information on the Team project is available in the Education section.

When does the registration period for family activities start?
The registration period for children’s and adults’ activities is open during the first fortnight of September.


Is the Museo wheelchair accessible?
Broadly speaking, the Museo Reina Sofía fulfils the current regulations with regard to accessibility and almost all visitable spaces are fully accessible. Certain aspects can still be improved, and their access conditions can be checked in the Services/Accessibility section.

Does the Museo provide wheelchairs? And mobility canes?
Yes, the Museo has wheelchairs available which are offered by order of request upon arrival to the Museo. These must be requested from the Sabatini and Nouvel Information Points. For such requests, the recipient must provide their personal details with either their national ID card, passport or similar. The Museo has folding cane seats available for any visitors requiring them. They are available at the visitor assistance points in the Sabatini Building, on Floor 1 and Floor 2.

Are there parking spaces designated for adapted vehicles?
The Museo does not have parking spaces available for visitors, which means there are no designated spaces. There is a public car park under Plaza Sánchez Bustillo. However, and only if there is space available, groups or people travelling in adapted vehicles can park free of charge in the Museo’s loading bay, with access via Calle Argumosa, on the corner with Calle Hospital. Can people with a disability access the Museo free of charge and without having to wait in possible queues to enter?
Yes, people with disability can gain access to the Museo free of charge, with prior accreditation using the corresponding card. Should they need to be accompanied, this person will also be exempt from admission charges. The full conditions are available here. People with disability can gain access without having to wait in any possible queues and should go directly to the desk at the priority access Ticket Offices, located in the Sabatini Building.

Does the Museo have Spanish Sign Language interpreters available?
The Sign Language Interpreters (LSE) service is offered upon request by visitors and can be used in any of the activities offered by the Museo. Upon registering, this service must be requested at least 15 days in advance by writing to Information on monthly inclusive guided tours with LSE interpreters is available in the corresponding Education section.

Are magnetic induction loops available?
The information and ticket desks in the Sabatini and Nouvel Buildings, along with the audio guide desk in the Sabatini Building (where sign guides, personal hearing loops and radio guide systems are available), are equipped with a permanent sound amplification system via a hearing loop for visitors with hearing aids, found in the position “T” (telecoil). The desks are marked with an identifying symbol.
